Color is an immensely evocative medium, possessing inherent powers to provoke immediate and marked reactions in the viewer, and as such it has been developed as a language of symbol in both the natural and the man-made worlds. Its use in architecture and the built environment is no exception, serving to dramatically affect perception of architectural space and form.

Don’t be afraid of using color. As architects, the final result of a space or building design is developed by both the massing of the building and the color of the building. Whether color is incorporated through the use of materials or actual color selection, the building’s perception and the experience viewers and occupants have of the building can be greatly impacted in a positive way. Use color to create spatial relationships or as opportunities for accentuation of shapes and building components.

If you’ve ever seen children drawing, you’ve probably noticed how they become completely engaged with their imagined world. Like children, architects draw an imagined world—a world yet to be realized. To better form these yet-to-be-realized works of architecture, many architects study the existing buildings around them. Sketching helps reveal underlying principles that inform the architecture designed today.

In our experience, even with the high-tech capabilities of the computer, AutoCad and other graphic programs, every project begins with a sketch. It is the architect’s only true tool to allow, from inception, ideas to flow and creativity to thrive. The pen (or pencil) and subsequent sketches, act as the catalyst for future development and evolution of the project. Details are brought to light, planning intricacies are exposed and concepts are thought through. The pen is definitely mightier than the sword, or in this case, the computer.

There is a constant struggle in the industry regarding building design related to the animal’s life and future. Should the design reflect a safe haven for the animals to live their lives out if necessary? Or should the space and complex appeal to the community, encouraging the community to adopt the animals, while also providing the best possible living environment? We have found that building and campus design should allow maximum animal socialization with both themselves and humans. This results in a well mannered pet, a more comfortable and educated owner and a well managed facility.

Interview with Tim Jaeger

The following is an impromptu interview with Sarasota artist and Ringling graduate Tim Jaeger. I hope you enjoy our conversation.

Q: Can a building be art on it’s own without sculpture or artwork?

A: Absolutely. The combination of being placed in an extraordinary cultural landscape, and the gift of bringing people together, puts us in the same position as we are when we are viewing other forms of art. This dialogue can create great friction…yet still bring a wide, diverse audience together. These are the very fundamentals of what makes art (in general) so unique and invaluable to the evolution of our culture.

Q: Other than location, what is the difference between exterior artwork and interior artwork?

A: I find more similarities than differences between the two but simply put, it is the difference between artwork(s) that relates to interior elements, and artwork(s) that relates to exterior elements. With both exterior and interior artwork, it is the difference of how the viewer(s) physically and mentally relate to the work.

Q: Can artwork impact a residential space different than a commercial space?

A: All artwork is capable of having great impact depending on the viewer, location, and space. From a personal point, residential artwork can have more of an impact for its owner because the collector selected that work to add to their personal collection…it means so much to them that they chose to own it and keep it close by. Commercial art typically demands mass appeal but without dilution of the response. It must be sensitive to its greater audience. It is usually striking and large in its effect as it’s about drama, sophistication and beauty.

You Light Up My Life

Architectural success is impacted by the opportunities that lighting provides to the interior and exterior of spaces and buildings. With the increase in more sustainable and energy efficient options, an architect can alter the feel of the space while increasing the light’s use and lowering the maintenance requirements. With new technology, incandescent bulbs can be replaced with LED bulbs or compact fluorescents and warm or cool colors can be applied appropriately to enhance any space.

Similar to the topic of last November’s newsletter, we begin the new year explaining to our readers the importance interior design has on enhancing architecture. This holds true for both commercial and residential projects. Interior design includes all facets of proportion, color, scale and architectural detailing. Windows are located based on interior design. Furniture is located based on interior design. Lighting is based on interior design. In order to fully achieve a successful and cohesive design, whether the architectural firm has an interior design department or a separate interior designer/decorator is hired, it is critical to combine these two consultants from the onset of the project.

BRING IT ON

An interesting approach to a potential project is a competition. Competitions are prevalent in Europe and provide opportunities for design firms to win large scale projects. In the United States, competitions are not as common. Recently, The Schimberg Group participated in a competition that proved successful for both the architects and the owners. Competitions, when handled properly (procedurally and financially), allow owners to gain ideas and select the best architect for the job, while allowing the architect and design team to explore projects in a different manner and express creativity in a competitive spirit.

A building is only as good as it’s surrounding landscaping. Landscaping provides the following:

Layering for visual appreciation
Natural elements connecting the structure to it’s environment
Color variation
Unique elements to enhance entryways or featured areas

It is critical for architects to approach projects, large or small, commercial or residential with landscaping in mind from the start of the design. By collaborating with the landscape designer or architect, a cohesive relationship between structure and plantings allows for a more successful project and a more complete design.
